Some people sit and stare at a blank screen until their eyes hurt. They just can’t put down the first word or draw the first line. Why? They’re afraid of getting it wrong. Well, guess what? We all get it wrong.
Designers don’t just design. They try something, then they try again, and again, often a dozen times or more. They aren’t seeking perfection. Their goal is organization, refinement and the discovery of new associations.
Personally, I have no desire to get it right the first time. I’ve learned that the creative process must have room for error and revision, for identifying weaknesses and finding solutions. It’s liberating to know that my first step can be a stumble because its always a part of the dance.
Because the only thing worse than falling is not moving forward at all.
The old "run before you walk" bit. Wait....flip that.
Anyway, good advice. I'm as guilty as anyone of not moving forward at times. You have to take that chance.
Famous photographer Duane Michaels once said something along the lines of, "You've never baked an apple pie until you do it, you've never painted a picture until you do it. So shut up and do it. What's the worse thing that can happen? You screw up. Who cares?"
